What is a Webmaster?

What is a Webmaster?

A webmaster runs web server that delivers web pages in the internet.  The webmaster is responsible for software upgrades to the web server as well as planning and installing hardware upgrades to increase the capacity of the web server.  Some webmasters develop scripting and content for websites.

A webmaster may also be responsible for some administrative responsibilities such as developing policies, reviewing and editing content of web pages, and responding to complaints and requests from web users.

What Skills Do Webmasters Need?

Webmasters need to be skilled at installing and operating software on a web server.  A webmaster may need to analyze computing requirements and develop a web server including both hardware and software aspects.  Webmasters should also be proficient with HTML, web scripting, and webpage development tools to support delivery and troubleshooting of web content.

The book Webmaster in a Nutshell, Third Edition is a quick way to get up to speed as a webmaster.
