A patent troll is a person or company who holds patents and attempts to enforce patent rights and obtain fees, but does not produce products based on the patents. Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs) and Patent Holding Companies are sometimes referred to as patent trolls.How Do Patent Trolls Make Money?
Patent Trolls may file patent applications and get patents issued in various technology areas. Many Patent Trolls do not produce any products at all. Patent Trolls approach innovative companies with patent infringement claims, which may be settled by the manufacturing company paying licensing fees to the Patent Troll in order to avoid lawsuits. Some Patent Trolls seek licensing fees from end users of technology rather than manufacturers.
