What is a Digital SLR Camera?

What is an SLR Camera?

SLR is an acronym that stands for "single lens reflex".  An SLR camera is a Single Lens Reflex Camera.

An SLR camera shows the view of the scene through the lens in the viewfinder.  This allows the photographer to see exactly what the photograph will look like when composing a picture.  Other types of cameras such as point and shoot cameras simply use a clear window as a viewfinder.  SLR cameras also allow the lens to be changed.  This is useful for using telephoto lenses or lenses for low light photography.

What is a Digital SLR?

A digital SLR camera is an SLR camera with a digital sensor rather than film.  A digital SLR camera has the same optics and housing as a film SLR camera.  A digital SLR camera has a computer to capture and store digital images.  Many digital SLR cameras have LCD screens that allow digital pictures to be displayed and even edited on the camera.  The LCD screen can also be used instead of a viewfinder for a live preview of the image that will be captured.
