What is HD radio?

HD radio is high definition digital radio transmission from local radio stations.  In addition to the usual analog signal, HD radio stations also transmit digital radio signals in the same frequency band as their analog signal.  Both AM and FM stations can broadcast HD radio signals.

HD radio also allows local station to add HD channels in the same frequency band as their analog signal.  This opens the possibility of adding additional radio broadcast channels.
